Matcha green tea is one of the healthiest beverages in the world. The health benefits of matcha green tea are well documented. It is why many call it a superfood. But how do you make matcha?
Many people get confused about the preparation process, as it is a little bit different compared to other teas. While most teas are in leaf form, matcha is a powder. It means the typical process of just adding water to leaves and then straining them out does not work.
We will assess the method of making matcha, giving you an authentic look at how it is prepared. Then we have three fun matcha green tea recipes to share with you.
How To Make Matcha
If you want to make matcha the way it has been done for so many years, then you will need to get a bamboo whisk. You can use a tea bowl or any type of cup, but the bamboo whisk is a must if you want to get the best aesthetics and flavor.
Start by adding around one or two teaspoons of quality matcha powder into the cup. But you must do it through a sifter, as it will break up any clumps. Then add a little bit of hot water (two ounces) that you boiled on a kettle.
The key is to use the bamboo whisk to mix together the little bit of water that you added with your paste. You will whisk in a zig zag motion in a vigorous way. Keep doing this until you get more of a froth. It is a sign that you have mixed it properly.
Now you can add the rest of the water to fill up your cup. Or you can follow one of the recipes we have outlined below to have even more fun with your matcha green tea!
Three Fun Matcha Green Tea Recipes
- Matcha Latte
If you frequent any coffee or tea shop in the United States, then you have probably had a matcha latte by now. It has become a very popular beverage, because you get the incredible flavor of matcha with the sweetness of milk. And these lattes can be enjoyed hot or cold.
If you are enjoying it hot, then you will heat up your milk, use a frother to make it nice and thick, and then add it on top of the two ounces of matcha that you prepared earlier. Now you have a delicious latte.
If you want it cold, we recommend adding chilled milk and ice to a glass and then pouring the matcha on top. You can use a spoon to stir it around, or a cocktail shaker if you want to be very fancy about it!
- Matcha Cooler
You do not even need to add any milk or sugar if you want to enjoy a chilled glass of matcha. It pairs very well with chilled water. What you will do is add cold water and ice to your glass and then your hot matcha on top. Stir it up and you will have a delicious, chilled drink that is perfect for summer mornings!
If you want to step it up another level, you can add a slice of lime or lemon. You can even mix it with some lemonade for a matcha lemonade beverage!
- Matcha Cocktails
Much like other teas, matcha goes great with certain alcohols. You can try it with gin or vodka. Combining two ounces of matcha with two ounces of alcohol, ice, lemon juice and some sugar will create the perfect drink. You can even skip the sugar if you do not want it to be too sweet.
In this instance, we would encourage you to use a shaker, as you will be able to combine everything perfectly. Now you can serve matcha cocktails with Sunday brunch or at your next evening gathering!
